Grattage - For Prepared Piano, Voice, Appalachian Dulcimer & Central American Flute (2019)

about

Max Ernst (1891-1976) is credited with developing a painting technique called "Grattage" where he would create a textured under-layer, let it dry, and then paint over the top of it. Then he would selectively scrape the upper layer off in a creative way to reveal the underneath layer.
The first layer I recorded was a prepared piano track in the style of John Cage (1912-1992). After this I recorded multiple tracks to the rhythm of the prepared piano track including voice, Appalachian dulcimer (in many styles), and Central American flute.
Then in the final editing process I deleted and edited until it revealed what you hear.
This work, along with "Nothing is Accomplished" were choreographed by Vincas Greene for the work "Merce C" which was performed in Spokane, WA at the Bing Crosby Theater on May 9 & 10, 2019 to celebrate Merce Cunningham’s 100 Birthday.
