Game Theory: Backgammon (2020)

by Kenneth L. Field

about

This work was originally conceived during my composition studies at Western Michigan University in 1979. The idea was to musically represent a game of backgammon. For this work, I reconstructed the original game from my old score and notes and completely reworked the idea. The two sides, black and white, are trying to make it around the board and make it "home." Each "checker" is represented by a different musical instrument. The white checkers can be heard continually climbing up the chromatic scale while the black checkers are continually scaling down the chromatic scale. The game is over when all the checkers of one side make it home. I hope to add more works to Game Theory. Checkers and Chess are both on my list.
